Dissolution of Marriage Promise: Legal Framework & Public Notification

Dissolution of Marriage Promise: Legal Framework & Public Notification

The Marriage Law [Law 104(I)/2003] governs the statutory commitments arising from a formal promise of marriage in Cyprus. When an engagement is revoked, public disclosure of the dissolution becomes necessary to protect the legal and financial interests of both parties.

Property Claims and Revocation of State Benefit Applications

Publishing a Dissolution Notice in the daily press serves two primary legal functions:

  1. Restitution of Engagement Gifts: Cyprus law mandates the return of gifts or property assets conveyed in contemplation of the impending marriage.
  2. Cancellation of Welfare Applications: State agencies (such as YMAE) are formally notified to halt joint housing grant applications, avoiding penalties for misleading declarations.
